Indian citizens do not require a visa to enter Nepal. Indians can enter Nepal by showing identity proof like an Election Card or passport. 

You can travel to Nepal from India by air or by two-wheeler or four-wheeler. If traveling by road, you need a pass for the number of days you intend to stay in Nepal. If you have to travel to Nepal for just one day, you can get a Day Permit at the border without paying customs fees.

Documents Required for Indian Citizens to Enter Nepal 

Indians over the age of 10 entering Nepal should have one of the following documents. 
  • Valid Indian Passport
  • Original Indian Voter ID card with Photograph issued by the Election Commission of India
  • Emergency certificate issued by the Embassy of India in Nepal

Downloaded or online printed Voter ID card containing details is not acceptable as a travel document
Other documents, such as Aadhaar, PAN card, Driving License, Indian Embassy Registration, etc., are also not accepted for travel to Nepal.

Exceptions to Travel Documents

  • Indian citizens under 15 and over 65 can enter Nepal by showing a photo ID, such as a PAN card, driver's license, ration card, etc.
  • Indian citizens between 15 and 18 years old can enter Nepal by showing an identity certificate issued by their academic institution's principal.

Documents Required to Travel to Nepal from India by Road

Along with the above-mentioned proof of citizenship, Indian citizens need to have the following documents to cross the Nepal border (if traveling by road):

  • Vehicle's registration certificate
  • A driving license
  • Customs or Bhansar permit
  • A vehicle permit or Yaatayaat Anumati

Entering Nepal from India by Road

  • Cars with Indian registration numbers can stay in Nepal for a maximum of 30 days in one calendar year. It cannot stay in Nepal for more than 30 days in a year even on payment of extra charges
  • You need to have a pass for the number of days you intend to stay in Nepal. It costs between NR 100 to NR 500 per day, depending on the type of vehicle
  • You must exit Nepal before the expiry of the pass duration. In case you want to extend your stay, you must exit and then enter Nepal on a new pass
  • You must have the pass with you at all times for inspection by authorities at any time. You need to surrender the pass at Nepali Customs at the time of exit from Nepal
  • If you are visiting Nepal for just one day, you can get a Day Pass or Day Challan at the Nepal border without paying customs fees. However, you must return to India within 24 hours and return the pass to the Nepali Customs.

Indian citizens visiting Nepal can use UPI to make payments in Nepal.

Can I go to Nepal with an Aadhaar card?

No, you cannot enter into Nepal with an Aadhaar card. Only a valid Indian passport or Original Indian Voter ID card with a Photograph issued by the Election Commission of India is accepted for entry into Nepal.
