FAQs on Seven Sisters of India

Why are 7 sisters called 7 sisters?

The "Seven Sisters" is a colloquial term that refers to the seven contiguous states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura in Northeastern India. These states are called the "Seven Sisters" due to their geographical, historical, and cultural similarities. The term was coined in the late 1960s by Jyoti Prasad Saikia, a journalist from Tripura, and was meant to highlight the camaraderie and interdependence among these states, much like siblings in a family.

Why Sikkim is not in Seven Sisters?

Sikkim is not included in the "Seven Sisters" of India primarily because the term "Seven Sisters" was coined to represent the seven contiguous states of Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. These states share historical, geographical, and cultural ties. Sikkim, while geographically in the northeast and sharing some cultural similarities with its neighboring states, became a part of India later, in 1975, after its merger with the Indian union. Additionally, Sikkim's historical and political journey has been different from that of the Seven Sisters, which led to its distinction from this group.
