Situated at an altitude of 2730 m above sea level, Gulmarg is a popular skiing destination located in Pir Panjal Range of Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Surrounded by snow-covered lofty Himalayas, meadows of flowers, deep ravines, evergreen forested valleys, Gulmarg also has the world's second-highest Gondola ride.

Gulmarg is one of the top honeymoon destinations in India. Gulmarg has also been developed as an adventure hub as the Indian Institute of Skiing, and Mountaineering is located here. A lot of courses on trekking, mountaineering, skiing, and snowboarding are offered by IISM. There are a lot of other private tour operators in Gulmarg as well, which provide similar courses and facilities for skiing and snowboarding. Known for its scenic beauty, Gulmarg has also been a popular destination for shooting various Bollywood films.

It is mandatory to get a union taxi also called chain taxis in Gulmarg during winters. The chain taxis for Gulmarg are available at Tangmarg, 13 km away from Gulmarg.
Essentials such as Snow jackets and boots can be rented from Tangmarg for a minimal price. Starting from INR 250.
Drung Waterfall in Gulmarg can only be accessed by an ATV or the chain taxis. Price: INR 2000-2500. Note, it's not mandatory to hire union taxis during summer.
Get tickets for phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kungdoor) and phase 2 (Kungdoor and Apharwat) from this website. Prior booking is mandatory as the slots are limited.

Tourist Scam in Gulmarg

The dropping point for cabs is around 600 metres from the Gondola starting point. The pony hawkers or sledge pullers might try to scare you off by saying that the distance is 3 km. They will quote an exorbitant price ( around INR 1000) by saying it is the official price of the J&K government. It is advised not to fall into the tourist scam and only hire a pony if required. The rates are negotiable and will cost you around INR 500 (to and fro).

Ticket Prices: The Gondola ride takes place in two phases and the prices vary accordingly with an additional convenience fee.
Phase I - From Gulmarg to Kongdoori charges 740 INR per person.
Phase II - From Kongdoori to Apharwat costs 950 INR per person. This phase also offers a Chairlift from Kongdoori to Mary’s Shoulder costing 300 INR per person.

Explore the Kongdoori Mountains - The Kongdoori Mountains act as a vantage point that offers panoramic views of the lush green valleys and snow-capped mountain peaks. You can spend some time here and enjoy the views. This is also an excellent spot for photography. If interested you can also try adventure activities such as skiing or snowboarding. Alpather Lake - If you do Phase II of the gondola rides, then you will arrive at the Apharwat Peaks. The Alpather Lake is situated at the foot of this peak and is famous for its crystal clear water. This lake often remains frozen during winters and is an unforgettable sight.
Lunch Break - The Gondola rides along with the Kongdoori Mountain and Alpather Lake exploration will end around 2:00 PM. You can take a break and enjoy lunch at a local eatery, cafe, or restaurant in Gulmarg. Make sure to enjoy the traditional Kashmiri cuisine here and do not miss out on the traditional Kashmiri Polau and Aloo Dum.
Visit the Golf Course - You will be able to wrap up your lunch and reach the Gulmarg Golf Course by 2:30 PM. This is claimed to be the highest green golf course in the world. It is located on the lower ranges of Gulmarg and offers stunning views of the place. You can try your hand at golfing here as well.

From Gaurimarg to Gulmarg

Had an unpleasant experience with the guys who bring horse for riding. They force you for horse riding and finally threaten. You can walk to the cable car point in Gulmarg and take tickets to go up. (Read More)The taxi drivers will stop way before the cable car point as per the agreement with the horse wallas. Even the police their take bribes. But you are free to walk. Never go for horse ride in Gulmarg. Have fun.
