Just a 1 hour drive down from Agra, this is a perfect destination for the wildlife enthusiasts. It is a habitat of some of the most endangered species, but the main attraction here are, Gharial, Red crowned turtles, Gangetic Dolphins, Indian skimmers, among others.

The beautiful sanctuary is surrounded by the Chambal river, known to be one of the cleanest river of India. It provides you a combination of a unique and unpolluted habitat, abundant wildlife and amazing landscapes, medieval temples and magnificent ancient ruins, animal fairs and naga sadhus, far far away from the chaos of the city. Tourists usually rent a motorized boat and go up and down the river as it flows through the ravines which makes for a serene experience. The boatmen are excellent at maneuvering as close to the birds and animals as possible without disturbing them to give you the opportunity to sight beautiful animals.
Trained wildlife experts can also accompany visitors and provide expert information on the wildlife. Walks around the river and ravines are also organized which makes for an exciting yet serene experience especially during mornings and evenings. 
It is not only a wildlife lovers' and a birdwatcher's paradise, but also the perfect place to go to to take a leisure break.

The temple complex is made up of 200 temples and is situated deep in the rocky cliffs of Chambal, in Madhya Pradesh. The temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva or Bateshwar Mahadev and hence are called Bateshwar Temples.

Chambal River Safari

The Chambal River Safari is the highlight of the sanctuary. The river safari is almost 3 hours long and is the best way to enjoy the view of the rare and endangered species. Chambal river is the lifeline of the forest and meanders its way across the three states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Boats with a seating capacity of few more than a dozen people are arranged by the Chambal Safari Lodge. These boats carry the people through the river, exploring the beautiful flora and fauna. Boats also have guides for the tourists.

The endangered Gharial and Ganges River Dolphin are the major attractions of the sanctuary. Other inhabitants of the sanctuary include Muggar crocodile, Bengal Fox, Indian Grey Mongoose, Smooth-coated Otter, Striped Hyaena and Indian Wolf. Chambal is also home to 8 out of 26 rare turtle species found in India. The park is also a haven for many migratory birds.

Reach Chambal Valley. Rest at the Forest Department Guest houses or the Chambal Safari Lodge, which makes for a luxurious accommodation. The National Chambal Sanctuary is 35 minutes away from the Chambal Safari Lodge. Reach the sanctuary. Hire a boat or a jeep to explore the river. The river safari is 3 to 4 hours long. There's a boat safari on the Chambal river, wherein you can see the River Dolphin and gharials. You can also see small predators like the Indian wolf and the striped hyena and smooth coated otters.

- The prices for the safari may vary depending where do you take it from. The Chambal Safari lodge has separate boats and the safari here is expensive compared to the other government organizations
- Do not try to venture alone into any parts of the river Chambal as it is infested with crocodiles
