Historic hotel at the heart of the town but looking a little tired.
This is a beautiful old and very historic building which will come with its associated problems, however the rooms were clean and the staff were all very friendly and efficient. They dealt with our room problem extremely well. It is great that an hotel like this accepts dogs, and they had left a dog bowl out in our room for us. We slept well and breakfast was served in the lovely dining room with nice white cloths and napkins and the food was acceptable, if a little dried up under the heat lamps. As there wasn't a performance at the Opera House on the evening we stayed, we were able to park right outside. For anyone without a car the location is perfect, in walking distance from the station and all the town has to offer.
I was brought up in the town and this used to be a very posh and well respected hotel. It is sad to see that it clearly now needs some considerable investment in it as it has become the poor relation to the Crescent next door. Whilst old buildings come with their problems and can never be on a par with a new purpose built hotel, improvements could be made to the tired corridor decor, electric sockets in rooms, plumbing etc. Using the age of the hotel as an excuse to its failings is not very fair. We were allocated a "dog friendly" room and, understandably, this wasn't one of the better rooms. The others in our party had a very nice room at the front. Sadly, our first room smelt extremely unpleasant and musty (not of dogs) and I had to ask to move. The receptionist kindly and efficiently found us another "dog" room, which was better but still tucked away at the back. All this is fine, to be able to take our dog away but to have to pay 20 extra, as well as get the inferior rooms is a bit of a double whammy.

    Superb
    Exceeded our expectations.
We stayed at the Old Hall for two nights over Christmas while visiting family and really enjoyed it. We had room 22 and it was huge - comfy double bed, a two-seater sofa and two more armchairs, plus a writing desk. We even had 10(!) plug sockets available to use. Bathroom very clean, with full-size bath and good shower. Breakfast was included and was a tasty way to start the day. And the service was always excellent.
The room was very warm on the first night, even after turning the radiators down, but better on the second night after we realised that we could open the windows. Also, the TV could do with an upgrade as only a very limited number of channels (no BBC) were available. A minor quibble, though.

Perfect location, superb hotel, extremely dog friendly
The lady who greeted us was so welcoming and helped us get the dog through the swivelling door and up the stairs whilst we took the lift. It had a lovely Christmassy feel and having a separate space in the lounge so we could have breakfast with our dog was a lovely touch. Breakfast was perfect.
I think 20 per night for the dog is a bit steep and hadnt noticed there was a charge so it was a bit disheartening on top of the car park charge when we checked out.

    A wonderful memorable Christmas stay!
The rooms were comfortable and really warm especially at night. The showers were lovely and hot, there were plenty of clean towels available as well. The breakfast was fabulous, with a good selection of fruit as well as a fantastic cooked breakfast, the evening dinners were excellent. The food was cooked to perfection and very tasty. The cleaners came everyday including Christmas Day which we were impressed with. We also loved sitting in the lounge and relaxing over drinks. It was a good memorable Christmas! Alistair the Manager was a wonderful host. The staff members were excellent and very helpful. We liked the nostalgic look about the place and the atmosphere.
The television in the bedroom was pixelized a lot so sometimes we couldn't watch TV properly, but once we fiddled around with it , it came back on.Please do something about this. One of the sofas in the lounge was far too dent and worn out, it needs replacing.( where the Christmas tree was). The breakfast times could be extended to 11am instead of just 10am. The check out times could also be extended to 12 noon.
