About This Property

Located in the car-free centre of the World Heritage town of Hallstatt in Upper Austria’s Salzkammergut region, the 4-star superior Seehotel Grüner Baum offers spacious rooms with panoramic views of Lake Hallstatt. First mentioned in 1700, the fully renovated hotel offers a historic ambience, which has already served as a backdrop to several movies. Empress Sisi, the Austrian author Adalbert Stifter, Agatha Christie and many other personalities have stayed at this hotel. Seehotel Grüner Baum faces the historic market square on one side, while the other side of the building opens up towards the lake and features a terrace. Every day, the restaurant Zum Salzbaron serves freshly caught fish from the lake. Parking is possible for a charge in the P1 parking area outside the town. From there, free shuttle bus to the hotel is available (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.).

Unable to check in early. Office could not print me a receipt. I waited about 1/2 hour but left to catch the boat.

We had dreamed of possibly being snowed in - and it happened!

Having a restaurant in the hotel was a big plus for us. We especially enjoyed breakfast each morning. The amazingly friendly staff took care of our every need - including an extra night stay when we had a gorgeous though very wet snowfall which made for great fun making snowmen but treacherous travel. We had visited 6 years ago and hope to make it back again much sooner!

They canceled my reservation when I went to check in. They knew they couldnt accommodate me at noon when I initially went to check in, I was asked to return at 3 for check in. When I did return at 3 I was told they couldnt accommodate me due to bed bugs and the receptionist didnt have the guts to tell me this when I initially showed up at noon. They didnt do anything to make this situation better. Horrible experience with the staff. I was stranded on new years eve in Hallstatt without any accommodations.

Disappointing

Our booking (bed&breakfast) was not even in the hotels system although we had already paid a month ago and also had the booking confirmation. For a hotel that has a small number of rooms this was unacceptable and it was purely due to inefficient hotel management. We had no other option but to stay in an apartment (not even a hotel) which is not in Hallstat but 20 away by car. The price of the apartment was the same as the hotels but you can imagine that it would be a lot lower if we had booked the apartment more than a month ago as we did with the hotel. Also note that we decided to have dinner at the hotel so as to avoid further trouble and time lost but they did not even have the decency to offer it to us for free or even have a discount as a form of compensation. The only good thing they did was to show us the road to the apartment booked. Highly disappointed.

Superb

Incredible location and a beautiful room. The balcony from the room had such amazing views. The room was fitted out well and very comfortable and large. Good mix of old world charm and modern conveniences. The restaurant for lunch was good as well

Breakfast wasn't up to scratch for a hotel of this quality and price. Staff were good, but lacked any real warmth or friendliness (for example, we were almost refused entry to breakfast because time was tight even though we got there 40 minutes before it was meant to close, and when we came to check in at 2pm the first thing the man said to us was "check in opens at 3" rather than welcoming us, taking our bags, and suggesting we go check out the town for an hour before coming back to check in)
