This was our second stay at the Ambrose, and it was mostly fine. However, the hotel's signature scent is overwhelming. You can smell the perfumed odor from the sidewalk across the street. It's way, way too strong, particularly in the library. We literally had to open the doors so we could sit in the eating, and library areas. Our bathroom tub was ratty and definitely needs an idustrial cleaning regime or replacement. The furniture is too large for the room, making everything feel cramped.
Also, when I checked in, I asked to have access to the room before I moved my luggage because I'm very sensitive to cigarette smells. The front desk person obliged but made it awkward, saying something to the effect of, "Well, I've never heard of that before, but okay." I added that even though I know the property is smoke-free, not all guests follow that guideline and still smoke in their rooms. He assured me that NEVER happens.
Well, it does. Later that evening, we heard another guest telling the front desk staff that she smelled someone smoking a cigarette in their room. We also smelled it the next two nights when we were trying to enjoy the courtyard. Suffice it to say, it was unprofessional to make light of my request to smell the room before I moved my luggage. I'd even made the request for a room free of cigarette scents through booking.com when I booked to avoid a front desk staff person treating the request as if I was stupid. But alas, I was treated like I was an idiot. Later, when another person reported a guest was smoking in their room, I guess I wasn't so dumb after all.
The hotel has no control whether their guests follow the hotel rules. However, they can awknowledge it and be ready to accommodate the other guests who are negatively affected by bad behavoir instead of saying bad behavoir NEVER happens. Also, the hotel should be aware of messages in the Booking.
