    Ambience in cosy historic building
Lovely ambience in historic building. Lots if nooks and crannies, several inner courtyards, balconies, rooftops. All kinds of rooms and standards. Nothing for sissies but really charming for other kinds. Excellent loction, near beach, airport and shops. Real India.
Could look better from the outside

    Passable
    An old ill-maintained heritage building.
The old world building was charming. The trees, plants and courtyard were pleasing.
The room given to me had dusty bedsheets and crumpled cheap curtains with insect webs on them. The white wash was peeling off everywhere. The railings of the first floor were old and tilting out dangerously with some makeshift cement work done on it. The cats though sweet were a nuisance with their litter making the corridors stink. Cat poop was just outside the common bathrooms. The bathrooms are all only cemented and they are old, though clean. The beautiful building is going to waste with shabby maintenance. My room had almost no wifi or airtel connectivity , no phone or water supply and only basic living conditions.

    Great value for money
The guest house was the Turkish Consulate during Ottoman times and has lovely inner courtyards that make it a very peaceful oasis to stay in busy Chennai. The staff were helpful and friendly and it was great value for money. It was not at all damp in my room and very cool in December with just the fan on.

    Very good
For the adventurous traveler type with an appreciation for nostalgia
The building is fascinating with so many little nooks and staircases to explore. It is not in great shape, but for not much money, you get a memorable stay. Reminiscent of backpacking in the 80's/90's. The room was specious, AC and internet worked. Heads up, the double room with en-suite bathroom is not in the courtyard, but at the entrance of the complex. The rooms around the courtyard seem to not have en-suite bathroom.
Yes, sure, the building is not in great shape, but it's a fun place to explore. The bathroom, in particular the sink, was quite dusty, though, this would have been easy to improve. One day (morning) we had great hot water, the other day (around evening time) we didn't. May have been the pressure.

Nice, decadent, colonial building with some clear charm, large rooms, nice hosts
Rooms and restrooms havent been renovated in a very long time, and on the mosque side the speakers of the prayers calls are very loud

This old Haveli is very atmospheric and could be beautiful if they do some reconstruction, take care of it and clean properly. I liked also many plants in the yard. In some of the previous reviews I read, that they didn't have towels and the blanket on the bed. Now it was available.
The building and rooms are very neglected and dirty, big holes in windows mosquitoes nets, even a cat jumped through this hole to my bed at night while sleeping. The staff has problems to fill in the check in on-line form, 2 forms take to fill more than half an hour.

    Disappointing
Worst place weve stayed in India. Not recommended.
The house has loads of potential and there are some comfy outdoor spots.
Veeery rude staff. One farted in our face while we had to do an eeeextrem complicated check-in and later on woke us up at 5 am to deliver our laundry. The toilets and showers are ok but the cheaper rooms look very run down. There is nothing near the location. No food. No cafes. No sights.

Good old time backpacker and budget travellers institution.
Broadlands is an institution. It has been around for decades, and is still going strong. I have stayed here twice before some 25 and 30 years ago. Back in the days we heard about this place as soon as we arrived in India and met other travellers who had been there. I have NO IDEA how it could possibly 'fall' out of the latest edition of Lonely Planet. It is a backpacker and seasoned budget travellers place though and far from luxury, but it's friendly and welcoming. Modern day hostels can wait until another city. The exterior is showing its age, but hay, 2 years with covid hasn't done anybody a favour! Travellers have started trickling in, and hopefully it will be funds to freshen up the iconic baby blue and white paint soon. Rooms are kept fine though, and have good led lights. And the WiFi is SUPERB. Best WiFi I have had during my 6 months in India. Finally I could book flight tickets and catch up online. ...and yes, they still have the chai boys that bring you tea or coffee in flasks and breakfast in the morning.
It was nothing I didn't like.

    Disappointing
Not sure I will come back as impossible to sleep - Shane as could be very good with very small adjustments
The property looks fantastic on pictures and is cheap and central and the rooms are usually quite big. They all have fans The staff is very helpful especially Mahindra - Many thanks to him
Every room is pretty dirty, the beds are very hard and the pillows like stones. The en suite bathrooms should be deep cleaned as well as the floors everywhere

    Cheap
    Price, location, staff
The place could use new sheets, pillows, towels. All linens were generally not very clean but the price was so cheap that it was worth it. But definitely the place needs an upgrade in at least the linnens
