The Galtres is an old building right in the centre of the city. The Shambles is just around the corner. The rooms are so quaint, and the lodge has been decorated beautifully. The staff were very friendly and allowed us to leave a small suitcase at reception after we checked out so that we could do a bit more sightseeing before driving home. The breakfast was delicious, chefs kiss! We had the Full English and Id definitely recommend. A couple of tips for anyone wanting to stay in York: we used the park and ride so that we didnt have to park in the city. We parked our car at Askham Bar Park & Ride, its free and secure. Then we took the bus into town with a one way single ticket, which cost around 3 each. York is quite small. We managed to walk the whole city around 3 times in 24 hours. I can recommend the City Sightseeing bus. Your ticket is valid 24 hours and you have an audio guide, so you can learn interesting facts about the city and its history. The day we went it was pouring with rain, so we decided to go and watch a movie at the Everyman cinema. That was lovely, very small with couches and service at your seat. We stopped for a Guinness at the Tank and Paddle. Its expensive there but you have a great view of the river and if theres a special sports event, youll be able to catch it on one of their 20 TVs dotted around the restaurant. We had cocktails and food at The Slug and Lettuce. Everything was amazing, I would go there again next time. The Shambles is the oldest street in York and so pretty! We wanted to grab a bite to eat before exploring further and stumbled upon a street-food-esque shop called Shambles Kitchen. You get pulled pork sandwiches, among other things. Highly recommend! And how can we forget Bettys? A stunning tea room situated in the centre of town. Youll need to book a table in advance if you dont want to stand in a mile long queue.

There was a bit of water damage on the roof, which made the paint splitter away. Due to the old windows, it is quite loud at night. The booking was 20 more expensive with Booking.com, which I only discovered afterwards.

Most stunning lodge,historic, building, a must stay

A beautiful warm welcome from the staff, David the manager was a very helpful friendly member of staff, the lodge was designed lovely, the room was lovely and cosy and clean, in the forest restaurant, we had our Sunday lunch, wow absolutely gorgeous, lovely home made food, we also had a few evening meals aswell, absolutely lovely again, prestation was wonderful, food was delicious and hot, now the breakfast at the forest, well again absolutely lovely ,so much choice and all fresh hot and to us the best breakfast we have had in York we travel to York and staying here at the lodge has to be our favourite place, stunning lodge/restaurant, highly recommended a stay here, you won't be disappointed, definitely planing our next stay here

Fantastic stay and would highly recommend this little gem

Great location. Staff were so welcoming- nothing was too much trouble.

We were in the top twin bedroom (10) and it was quite cold although we found a fan heater in the room and put that on. There was also no centre light so it was a little dark when getting ready for our evening meal. Apart from that , it had some lovely features to the room.
