The Coal Exchange Hotel in Cardiff is housed in a historically significant building. The spacious rooms are comfortable, although some may have a slight smell of damp carpet. Needs improvement

Room was very cold on arrival and very dirty - fire door had a big gap at the bottom, so not secure in a fire. End of the evening the room was still very cold and staff reluctantly gave another heater - both beds in the room were full of hairs and food as if people had been eating in them. Asked to be moved to another room, told the hotel was full , we could have a refund but would have to leave - this was at 1:30 in the morning. Duty manager went to get fresh bed linen that took him 40 minutes and was then shocked that I expected him to change the beds! Bar tab machine that the hotel offer on arrival didn't work and I had my drinks removed from me which was very embarrassing - reception were not friendly whilst trying to sort it out and was told it was my error as their machine was working fine !! Explained my card had been accepted on arrival, I was given a card by the hotel to use in their machine that didn't work, she reluctantly sorted the issue. Following morning, reception staff were very friendly and tried to sort out the issue as did the events manager, however, I had to put it all in an email to gain a refund - this was processed quickly.

Poorly kept rooms, cold, not recommended

Lovely old building with grand rooms; characterful.

Treated myself to a more expensive hotel for a work overnight, just before Xmas. I was shown to a cold, stark room with curtains hanging off the rails and a dirty, dusty carpet which clearly had not been vacuumed for some time. Receptionist was helpful and moved me to a second room. Enormous and grand, but similarly stark and dusty with a broken bedside light, hairs on the bedding, and the carpet hadnt seen the underside of a vacuum cleaner for a while.I was utterly freezing, despite the plug in heater provided and slept with my coat and jumper on the bed to keep warm, which didnt work. After being frozen all night I woke with a sweaty back thanks to the waterproof mattress protector, evoking memories of a hospital stay. If it hadnt been so late, Id have driven home. On complaining, the manager refunded 40, but that still means I paid 43 for one of the most uncomfortable hotel stays ever.

Turned up at the hotel and was greeted by a sign saying it was closed and booking.com would be in touch for an alternative hotel. Called booking.com and they hadnt received this message, talked to Maylee (booking.com) that was super helpful, she tried to call the hotel and no answer. Quiet, elegant and romantic

Loved the style of rooms, comfort and tranquilty. The bath was lovely.

Dim lighting in corridors and lack of lit up bold signage making it difficult to find rooms easily.
