Deriving its name from Kundeshvara temple, the town of Kundapur owns a rich and glorious past. Once served as the centre of power of Vijaya Nagara Dynasty, Kundapur has been home to Rajas of Baindoor, Tipu Sultan, Portuguese in 16th century and finally the British. Also once been an important trading port, especially with the Middle East, today one can witness the footprints of the bygone era at every point in the town. Lying on the western coast of Karnataka, the town is flanked by water bodies on three sides, i.e. Panchgangavalli River in the north, Kalaghar River in the east and Arabian sea and picturesque Kodi backwaters in the west.
