Nubra has acquired fame for its sand dunes, its cold desert, Bactrian camels and its breath-taking natural beauty.
Native to the steppes of central Asia, the Bactrian camel has two humps, in contrast to the single-humped camels found in Rajasthan and other parts of India. The Bactrian camels were the main mode of transport when Ladakh was an important stopover on the Ancient trade routes with Central Asia.

Geographically, Turtuk lies in the Baltistan Region and is one of four such villages in India, with the other three being Tyakshi, Chalunkha, and Thang. It is predominantly a Muslim village, and residents speak languages such as Balti, Ladakhi, and Urdu. Turtuk is the last outpost in India, after which the Pakistan-controlled Gilgit-Baltistan begins. The gompa contains 10 temples; below the monastery itself are chapels and "houses" of monks stretching down the hillside. There are about 100 monks of the yellow-hat sect of Buddhism living here. After entering the main courtyard, to the immediate right and up several steps is a new temple containing a large Buddha statue. This Buddha, 15 meters tall was constructed in 1970 to commemorate a visit to Thiksey by the Dalai Lama. The statue is the largest Buddha figure in Ladakh and took four years to construct.

Rancho School (Druk Padma Karpo School): This school became famous after the Aamir Khan movie Three Idiots. It is also known as Druk White Lotus School.
