"Where Turkey Meets Greece!"

Alacati Tourism

Surrounded by the Aegean Sea, Alacati is a coastal town in Turkey. Nestled in the Cesme peninsula, this charming-old Greek town is popular for its vineyards, windmills and the sea. It is studded with natural stone houses with alcove windows and vibrantly coloured doors. Just a stoneÍs throw from Izmir, Alacati has an interesting history dating back to the 17th century and was recognised as a historical site in 2005.

Alacati is one of the best windsurfing destinations in the world. This off-beat location is excellent for a relaxing and quaint holiday, as there isn't much to do in this city. You can spend your days here walking down the narrow yet beautiful lanes, visiting a family-run vineyard or sunbathing at the beach. The highlight of Alacati is the collection of natural stone villas. The town remains studded with vintage houses framed by cobbled pathways and bougainvillaea flowers.

Being close to the coastline, Alacati is popular for beach hopping. Some popular beaches nearby are Delikli Koyu, Spiaggia Grande, Ilica Beach, and Wyndy Beach. Vacationing in Alacati will make you experience Turkey like a local. You can also participate in fish auctions or rejoice in the Alacati Herb Festival in March or Kite Festival at the beginning of the year.

History of Alacati

The formally Ionian town, Agrilia, was an Ottoman village of infantry and cavaliers. Agrilia was later renamed Alacati, in honour of the tribe Alacaat that once was housed in the region. Previously a village by the sea, Alacati suffered from a wave of malaria, after which it was reconstructed and inhabited by the Greeks between 1850-1890. During this time Alacati observed a cultural shift and became home to several vineyards and mastic trees. The Balkan wars and Exchange Periods between 1912 and 1923 brought in Turkish immigrants from Greece to Alacati; who destroyed the vineyards to plant tobacco, which couldn't breed on Alacati grounds Resulting in a poor economic situation and turning Alacatin into a ghost town eventually. During the 1990s, the windsurfers discovered Alacati again, and since then, it has been flourishing as a Turkish holiday retreat!
