The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, located in Almaty, is one of the largest and most significant museums in Central Asia, offering a comprehensive journey through the country’s rich history. Established in 1931, the museum houses an impressive collection of over 200,000 artefacts, spanning from the Bronze Age to modern times.
As you explore the museum’s galleries, you’ll find a fascinating array of archaeological, cultural, and political relics, including stone tools, textiles, religious objects, and military gear. One of the most prominent displays is the replica of the Golden Man, a national symbol of Kazakhstan, whose gold-clad remains date back to the 3rd or 4th century. The museum’s Hall of Gold showcases stunning ancient Scythian gold adornments from burial sites, while the ethnographic exhibition features traditional yurts, beautifully crafted weaponry, musical instruments, and costumes. The museum also highlights the sacrifices of WWII, the nomadic culture, and Kazakhstan’s diverse ethnic groups. While English signage is limited, guided tours are available for an additional fee.
