The Ascension Cathedral, also known as Zenkov Cathedral, is a stunning architectural landmark nestled in the heart of Almaty’s Panfilov Park. This five-domed wooden cathedral stands 56 meters tall and is considered one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world. The cathedral’s design is unique, with intricate detailing and colorful domes that resemble the grand architecture of St. Petersburg.
The Ascension Cathedral stands out for its distinctive wooden construction, without the use of any nails. Its unique design, with striking Russian Orthodox architectural elements, includes a stunning blend of colors and intricate details that captivate visitors. Beyond its religious significance, the Ascension Cathedral has a rich history marked by periods of closure and restoration. During Soviet rule, the cathedral was repurposed for secular uses, including serving as the Central Museum of Kazakhstan. It wasn’t until 1995 that it regained its religious function and began holding Orthodox services again.
