Aqaba Fortress, Aqaba Overview
The Aqaba Fortress, also known as the Mamluk Castle, is famous for its role in the Arab revolt. The Fortress is mainly intact today, and you can explore the entire two-storey structure, including the stables, the prison and the execution room. The main gate has been beautifully preserved in its original state.
The Aqaba Fortress acted mainly as a roadside inn for pilgrims on their way to Mecca and Medina until the 19th century when it was turned into a military stronghold. It was initially built in the 14th century but was refortified in the 16th century. The castle is located in downtown Aqaba and can be visited by taking a taxi.
