Etymology

It was believed that the Government developed the steel plant to enhance the economy of this region by supporting the backward and scheduled communities. Since the primary purpose was to alleviate poverty and to embrace the development of local communities, this place bagged the title ‘Bhalai’ or do good for the people. It is also believed that Bhilai derived its name from the local scheduled tribe Bhils that resided and populated in this region.
