History of Barber Institute of Fine Arts

Barber Institute of Fine Arts was founded in 1932 in memory of Henry Barber by his wife Martha Barber. Consequently, the institute was transferred to the University of Birmingham to encourage fine arts amongst the students. The building was designed by Robert Atkinson. About four months after the institute was founded in 1932, Martha Barber passed away leaving her wealth in the hands of the trustees. It was further used to purchase quality artwork, to match the standards of the artefacts at the Wallace Collection and the National Gallery. Later, in 1939, the institute was inaugurated by Queen Mary and opened up to the public.
