Čumil, also known as the "Man at Work," is a distinctive bronze statue located at the intersection of Laurinská and Panská streets in Bratislava's Old Town. Installed in 1997, this sculpture depicts a sewer worker emerging from a manhole, resting his chin on his folded arms with a contented expression. Over the years, Čumil has become one of the city's most beloved and photographed landmarks.
Created by Slovak artist Viktor Hulík, ÄŒumil was part of a city initiative in the late 1990s to revitalize the Old Town's public spaces. The statue's name translates to "watcher" or "observer" in Slovak, leading to various interpretations of its meaning. Some locals suggest that ÄŒumil is simply taking a break from work, while others playfully claim he's positioned to sneak a peek under ladies' skirts. Regardless of the interpretation, the statue embodies a sense of whimsy and charm that resonates with both residents and visitors.
