Located in Lanzarote and designed by Cesar Manrique, the Jardin de Cactus hosts over 1100 cacti species in a forgotten quarry that rests amid the island’s uniquely enthralling volcanic landscape. This is internationally awarded and one of the most essential cactus gardens in the world.
You name it, and you see it here; from soaring saguaros, spiny plus-sized globes (some larger than pumpkin and jackfruit) to strange twisted maggot-looking giants, spiked broccoli mounds, sea anemones, and dark green corals. All were curated by the most influential artist on the island to seemingly invent a botanical amphitheater, as The Guardian like to call it.
Not only that, he has also designed a staggering bar and cafe laden with furniture some of which was built in the 1930s, a sophisticated yet appealing spiral staircase and a wooden bar.
