Owing to the sizeable Chinese population in Chiang Mai, the Chinese New Year is celebrated every year with much pomp. Chinatown adjoined to the Warorot Market, decorates in auspicious red lanterns and dragons.
The Warorot Market is the hub of the Chiang Mai Chinese New Year. The streets here are generally closed for vehicles over the two-day main celebration. Ranging from Thai and Chinese food, clothes, accessories, and cutlery, Chinatown houses it all during the festival.
Although not an official holiday and not much about the celebration is noticeable throughout Thailand, Chinatown does host parades, fireworks and other celebratory elements throughout the event. Amidst streets zesty with lights and laughter, vendors set up authentic Chinese food stalls and performers entertain audiences with music and dance.
