Gortyna, Crete Overview

Gortyna, located in the southern part of Crete, Greece, is an ancient archaeological site steeped in history and myth. It is located in the modern city of Gortyn. With the ancient ruins of the city's Agora, Roman Odeon, and the famous Law Code of Gortyna inscribed on a massive stone slab, the site is small and can be covered within an hour. It also has some traditional tavernas close by.

It was an ancient city of significant importance and splendor, rivaled only by Knossos in its heyday. Historically, these two cities formed a league that exerted control over the entirety of Crete, although later conflicts led to continuous hostilities between them. The city, originally sizable, underwent a decline over time, with attempts at fortification by Ptolemy Philopator only partially completed.

Situated on a plain irrigated by the river Lethaeus, Gortyna boasted two harbors, Lebena and Metallum, and was mentioned by several ancient writers for its cultural and natural landmarks. Today, the site of Gortyna, modern Gortyn, stands as a major archaeological treasure in Crete, offering insights into its rich past through extensive ruins and artifacts.
