Lycian Rock Tombs

Lycian Tombs, Dalaman Overview

Lycian Rock Tombs are carved and built into the side of a mountain with an ancient belief of Lycians that the dead will be carried to the afterlife by the ancient angels. The tombs date back to the 4th century and look like temple entrances. They can only be reached through the Dalyan River, and you can take a boat trip that passes from in front of the tombs, directed towards Iztuzu Beach.

Numerous entryways are decked with Classical columns, a bit worn out from years of weathering. The weathering has left some older rocks to appear as holes dug into the rocky mountains. The tombs are grand on the outside but minimal on the inside, with just a simple monolith on the inside displaying the structure and the rooms. Because of hundreds of years of looting, they are empty inside.
