Linked to the Chalukya Dynasty and Tipu Sultan, this place today is best known for its cotton mills and thus often referred to as the 'Manchester of East'. Located in Central Karnataka, it lies on the National Highway 4 and well connected to neighbouring cities and states. According to the local tales, the place derived its name from a lake called 'Davina Kere' which was used by the Chalkya's to quench their thirst during their long journey. Over time, the name evolved to Davan Giri and finally to 'Davangere' or 'Davanagere'. Today the beautiful landscape of Davangere is dotted with many textile and handlooms mill.
