Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve is a preserved natural estuarine ecosystem that houses Durban's largest population of mangrove trees. It is located at the mouth of the Umgeni River in Durban North. It preserves the red, white and black mangrove trees. The reserve is also home to several animal species like the mudskippers, the dwarf chameleons, and fiddler crabs. In addition, there is a bird hide perfect for bird watching.
The Reserve has three different trails, including an elevated boardwalk built around the grove to walk through the swamps even at high tide. The second trail is through the bird hide, whereas the last is through the swamp where wading birds often feed. The other birdlife includes curlew, mangrove kingfishers, water dikkop and natal nightjar. KZN Wildlife Honorary Officers conduct guided tours of the Nature Reserve. There is also a stunning view of the city skyline from the Reserve.
