"World's Largest Sand Island"

Fraser Island Tourism

Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island, and a World Heritage-listed island. It is abundant in Australian natural beauty, boasting of vast sandy beaches, pristine lakes and dense rainforests.

Also known as K’Gari, meaning paradise, Fraser Island certainly lives up to its reputation. It is the only place on earth where a lush canopy of rainforests emerges from the sand that covers the area. The 40-minute boat ride from Hervey Bay to the island presents an abundance of opportunities to witness some of the most exotic marine life of the South Pacific Ocean, from dolphins to dugongs to manta rays. Lucky travellers will also be able to spot the magnificent humpback whales. As the largest island in Queensland and the Australian east coast, it is a protected natural treasure, with most of the island covered by the Great Sandy National Park. It is home to some exotic Australian fauna, with chances to spot the famous dingo and saltwater crocodile. The Fraser Island Great Walk spans a scenic 90-kilometre walk through the island, between Dilli Village, the first European settlement on the island and a former mining settlement, all the way to the Happy Valley township. The beautiful Lake Mckenzie is among the most popular of the lakes on the island, owing to it being a perched inland lake filled in by rainwater. A journey across the sand blows brings visitors to Lake Wabby, the deepest of the lakes on the island which is surrounded by tall, lush eucalyptus trees and the massive Hammerstone Sandblow.

The eastern edge of Fraser Island is home to the famous 75 Mile Beach, a long stretch of sand that can be driven upon with a four-wheel drive. It is along this coastline that visitors will come across the Maheno Shipwreck, remnants of a passenger ship that got wrecked on the coast by a cyclone in 1935. The colourful cliffs or the Pinnacles is a short walk from here, with the large scenic Eli Creek on the other side releasing a constant stream of fresh water into the ocean.
