Amangalla, Galle Overview

Amangalla is a luxury hotel within the confines of the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Ste. With a history dating back to the late 17th century, the building is currently a part of Aman Resorts, an international luxury hotel chain.

The property is a blend of colonial-era charm with a tinge of modernity and a dose of Sri Lankan hospitality. Tourists not staying at Amangalla need not bed disappointed—a section of the hotel is open to the public to experience the colonial setting with antique furnishings and chandeliers. Amangalla stands today as a reflection of Dutch architecture and is often visited on a tour of Galle Fort.

History of Amangalla

Amangalla was constructed in 1684 and functioned as the headquarters of the Dutch commanders and their staff. It was later used as a billet of the soldiers during the British occupation of the country. The building was transformed into the New Oriental Hotel by British businessmen in 1865, one of twelve such hotels at the fort, accommodating Europeans travelling to Asia. The hotel was purchased by a Dutch Burgher family, who managed it for nearly a century. Aman Resorts later bought the property in 1995; they renamed it Amangalla and reopened it in 2004.

Architecture of Amangalla

Amangalla is a prime example of antiquity integrated with modernity. One can enter the two-storied hotel through the Great Hall, which is known as Zaal by the Dutch. The hotel currently houses approximately thirty rooms, a spa, a restaurant serving delicious and authentic Sri Lankan fare, a library with informative books and artefacts showcasing the hotel’s history, and a pool.

1. The Zaal, veranda, restaurant and the reception area are open to visitors. Beyond these areas, entry is not permitted to non-staying guests.

2. The average price for a room at Amangalla is LKR 79000 per night.
