Fort Tiracol, Goa Overview

Across the Terekhol river from the Querim beach in North Goa lies the majestic Tiracol Fort. Also known as the Terekhol Fort, this magnificent structure was once a crucial part of the maritime defence of the Portuguese colonists. Today, it serves as the marvellous Fort Tiracol heritage hotel. It offers an unbeatable panoramic view of the Arabian Sea.

The surrounding greenery amplifies the beauty of Fort Tiracol set atop the picturesque hillock of the Northern river. A charming church lies in the middle of the fort within the courtyard, built in the 18th century during the rule of the Portuguese. This church is not open to the public except for special occasions such as the annual feast that happens in May. The part of the fort is still open to visitors. If visiting Fort Tiracol, one can have a delicious luncheon at the Fort Tiracol Heritage Hotel.

History of the Terekhol Fort

The fort was originally built in the 17th century by Raja Khem Sawant, the Maharaja of Sawantwadi, as the hillock offered a commanding view of the Arabian Sea. In 1746, the fort was surrendered to the Portuguese after several skirmishes between the forces of Sawantwadi and the Portuguese Army, renaming the fort as 'Holy Trinity Fortress of Tiracol'. The church of the Holy Trinity was built during this time as well.

The fort remained under Portuguese rule till 1961, which marked the exit of the Portuguese from the Indian territory. Due to repeated wars, the integrity of the fort had been compromised. In 1976, efforts were made to develop the fort into a weekend holiday resort and it was eventually converted into the heritage hotel we see today.
