History of Dambakola Patuna

The port has a religious significance, as it is believed that in 249BC, the Bodhi tree sapling, the tree under which Buddha was enlightened was brought to the country of Sri Lanka along with a stupa, but no such remains have been found in the present. But to restore the religious importance of the port, the Sri Lankan Navy has planted a Bodhi tree sapling and has also built a temple with a stupa inside of it.
