The Chaka climb from Kalpa presents an enchanting trekking experience through the Himalayan landscape, leading to the picturesque Chaka meadow situated at an altitude of approximately 3800 meters above sea level. The trail commences from a point on the Kalpa-Roghi road, just above the charming village of Kalpa, which is located at an elevation of 2960 meters above sea level and is a short 10-kilometer drive from the district headquarters, Reckong Peo.
Although prior trekking experience is not necessary for this hike, a moderate level of fitness is recommended, as the initial ascent can be steep. Starting from a trail near Hotel Rakpa Regency, trekkers follow a path alongside a stream, which originates from the Chaka itself, leading to the Chaka Meadows. It's advisable to begin the hike early in the morning to avoid the harsh midday sun and minimize the strain of carrying a backpack.
The trek offers more than just physical exertion; it fosters a sense of camaraderie among companions as they navigate through challenging terrain together. The journey is rewarded with breathtaking views of the sunrise over the Kinner Kailash mountain, panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges, and captivating glimpses of the Kalpa village below.
The trail spans approximately 3 kilometers and passes through fields belonging to the Chini villagers, as well as spruce and cedar forests before reaching the meadows of Chaka. This day hike allows trekkers to return to the Kalpa-Roghi road by evening, completing a fulfilling journey through the Himalayan wilderness.
During winter, the trail takes on a serene and tranquil ambiance, offering a unique perspective of the landscape adorned with snow-laden peaks and clear skies. While the absence of crowds enhances the solitude of the trek, trekkers are advised to exercise caution and carry appropriate gear, including layers of clothing, to mitigate the risks associated with winter hiking.
