Ainos National park is the only national park on any of the Greek Islands located on the southwest coast of Kefalonia. Mount Ainos is the tallest mountain peak in all of the Ionian Islands. Some of the best hiking, trekking trails, and camping spots on the island are on the mountain, with mysterious lakes, caves, and rare species of flora and fauna. Jeep Safari tours are also available here. The Panagia monastery and an outdoor theatre are also located within the national park.
Mount Ainos National Park comprises four mountain peaks, including Ainos, Megalos Soros, Gioupari, and Monalati, all covered in dense forests of the rare black pine and fir trees. It was declared a national park in 1962 to protect the natural beauty and wildlife on Mount Ainos. The national park is renowned as the home of the rare Ainos Horses, wild goats, foxes, owls, and many more. All the trails lead to a mesmerising panoramic view of the island.
