Moken Village and Moken People
During your trip to the Surin Islands, you may spot the residential areas of the Moken community, which are also known as Chao Lay or “Sea Gypsies”. Presently, there are three different tribes living on the islands. While interacting with them, you will realize that the Moken people spend most of their time floating away in their boats, called Kabang, from one bay to another, and reside on the beaches only during the monsoon season.
You can also buy souvenirs prepared by them at the island as a memento of your visit to Surin Islands. How to Reach Surin Islands
The Surin Islands are situated around 60 Km Westwards off the shore of Khao Lak. It usually takes around 40 to 45 minutes to reach via speedboat. To reach the Surin Islands, you need to hop on to a speedboat being run by the National Park authorities. Since the islands are located 60 Km west of the Khao Lak’s shore, there is no other option to reach the place than by going through waters.
