Also Refered As:Koh Phra Thong, also known as the Golden Buddha Islands, is located in the Khura Buri district of Phang Nga province in southern Thailand. It is 120km from Phuket and 45km from Khao Lak and is the middle link in a chain of three islands - Koh Ra, Koh Phra Thong and Koh Kho Khao. Koh Phra Thong is known for its vast stretch of uninhabited beaches fringed by coconut palms. The island's landscape is enchantingly similar to Africa's savannahs, making it one of Thailand's best destinations for bird-watching.
It is named Golden Buddha after a local legend. The story tells of a precious golden Buddha statue stolen and buried on the island by pirates that were never recovered.
The eastern side of Koh Phra Thong has mangrove forests while the breathtaking sandy beaches are scattered on the west. There are plenty of activities to do here like cycling around the island, kayaking, snorkeling, and night fish excursions. However, the main draw is the beaches.
Koh Pling Yai and Koh Pling Noi are two small tropical islands in Golden Buddha Bay. The Pling Islands are demarcated by a coral-lined channel that serves as a home for diverse marine life. The islands themselves feature rich tropical vegetation. Each one has an inland-facing beach, sheltered from the Andaman Sea. The two Islands assist in breaking up any waves coming in from the outside, keeping the bay interior serene and safe. Koh Phra Thong is also the nearest island to Thailand's top dive sites - Richelieu Rock and the Surin Islands.
