Perched on the top of the palm-covered Kurumkal Hill, the Vizhinjam Lighthouse is set on the coastline of the Arabian sea, near Kovalam beach in Kerala. The lighthouse has a cylindrical structure built entirely with stones. It has a height of 36 m and is painted in a candy pattern with red and white bands. Remarkably, the Vizhinjam lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Kovalam that offers mesmerizing views of the surrounding area. Arabian sea and Kovalam beach.
The Vizhinjam lighthouse stands stunningly, overlooking the Arabian sea, and is only around 2 km from the Rock Cut Cave. In the 18th & 19th centuries, Vizhinjam was a bustling seaport, and this lighthouse was established in June 1972, before which no lighthouse was there at this location. It is because of the Vizhinjam lighthouse that the nearby beach became known as Lighthouse beach. The proximity of Vizhinjam lighthouse to Kovalam beach has also made it known as Kovalam Lighthouse.
It lets you enjoy some of the best views of the Kovalam beach & the sea. The lighthouse features a spiral staircase with around 144 stairs to reach the top of its tall structure to click some memorable photographs. The lighthouse is equipped with a direct drive mechanism, metal halide lamps & elevator facility is also available to go on top.
