The name Zanskar has multiple unconfirmed sources from the Tibetian dialect which translate to Copper White, Copper Palace or Copper Star which may be due to the natural occurrence of copper in the region and another evident translation is known to be ‘Good White’. Zanskar’s history dates back earlier than 200 BC and the Petroglyphs give an idea that the earliest settlers in the land would be hunters. The most recent history gives a clear picture of the Tibetian powers followed by the establishment of Karsh and Phugtal monasteries in Zanskar by the 11th century.
