The St Johns Beacon is a radio and observation tower in Liverpool. One can view the entire city of Liverpool from this tower which makes it quite a fascinating experience. A 10m long antenna is found on the roof which makes it the tallest building in Liverpool.
The tower’s name originates from the prime radio station that functions from it, Radio City and its adjacent station the Greatest Hits Radio Liverpool and the North West. The tower was originally used as a chimney for the waste incinerator of St, John’s Precinct and the Market. Initially, the tower functioned as a revolving restaurant with an observation deck, however, it was shut down at a later stage due to a lack of full-proof safety measures. There is also a facility for a lift which fetches people to the observation deck and is quite quick in terms of its service. It was constructed in 1969 and inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II. While visiting the viewing gallery, one can come across award-winning radio stations such as Radio City, Radio City Talk and Great Hits Radio which are found in the Beacon. Since September 2020, the local programming of Radio City and the National programming of Greatest Hits Radio takes place in the studios of the tower. This tower offers striking views and is considered a hub for photography thus attracting many tourists from all around the world.
