Memnon Colossi, Luxor Overview

Memnon Colossi are two large statues known to guard the temple of Amenhotep III in the past and are a must-visit. These colossal figures stand tall amidst the vast desert landscape, on the west bank of Luxor, on the way to Madinet Habu from the Valley of Workers. Each statue is about 60 m tall, weighs around 720 tons, and has been made using quartz sandstone.

Over time, their facial structures and discerning crowns have been destroyed. However, there is no denying that they still look imposing and majestic. If you look closer, you will find carvings near the legs of these statues, representing Amenhotep IIIÍs wife and mother. Visitors to Luxor considering a trip to the Memnon Colossi should know that while the statues are impressive, the surrounding area lacks extensive facilities. There are no museums or visitor centers nearby, so tourists should be prepared for a more rustic experience.
