Church of Saint Jerome the Royal, directly behind the Prado Museum in the Retiro district, is an architectural marvel that blends Gothic and Renaissance styles which reflects in its intricate façade and interior design. It features equally beautiful interiors in form of ornate altarpieces and vaulted ceilings. The stained glass windows allow natural light to illuminate the interior. It is located centrally close to several attractions like Alcaca Gate, El Retiro park etc.
The church’s Isabelline Gothic façade is adorned with intricate carvings, pointed arches, and delicate spires. It is a stunning example of 16th-century Spanish Gothic architecture. Constructed in the early 16th century, it originally formed part of a Hieronymite monastery adjacent to the now partially preserved Buen Retiro Palace, with its cloister integrated into the Prado Museum's extension. For centuries, the church was the site for the investiture ceremonies of the Princes of Asturias, the heirs to the Spanish throne. Notably, King Juan Carlos I's investiture Mass was held here.
