The Doctor's House is a 200-year-old former Dutch and Ayurvedic hospital situated in the beautiful beachside village of Madiha. It was taken over by a few Australian men who openly admit to having zero hospitality experience but aim to have a bit of fun while hosting and creating a good vibe. Even though it was once a hospital, it has now turned into one of the most fun places to stay for both locals and tourists. The site has eateries and dorm rooms you can hire to spend the night. Along with this, many water sports and indoor and outdoor games are available that will keep you and your friends and family entertained throughout your stay.

The highlights of staying at The Doctor's House are the freedom to hang out under the palm trees and take in the glorious sights of the Laccadive Sea. They have set up a very casual yet ambient dining area, which is spectacular in the afternoon and evening, where the warm lights and relaxing tunes let you forget about your worries and busy life.

Things to Do at The Doctor's House

The main activities at The Doctor's House are Surfing and Snorkelling. For the surfers, there are amazing surfing spots just walking distance away. There are also places nearby where you can rent out surfing equipment and surfing boards. The water here is a little rough and only for those who know surfing at an intermediate or advanced level. Snorkelling is at your doorstep at this location. There is an inviting lagoon out the front with plenty of corals and fish open to people of all ages. The area is also fantastic for snorkelling with the turtles.

Dining at Doctor's House

Doctor's House is known for its fantastic food. They serve fresh Wood Fired pizzas all day long for the guests. They have happy hour from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and you can get some exotic drinks and cocktails at this time. The breakfast options include breakfast burritos, smoothie bowls and other refreshing snacks. They serve a good range of healthy juices, fresh fruit smoothies, Italian roasted espresso coffee, oven baked treats and vegan goodies. For lunch and dinner, you can grab salads, bowls, pasta and other Italian options. They have both vegan and gluten-free options available. They place also serves delicious wines and cold beer.

How To Reach Doctor’s House, Mirissa

The Doctor's House is located about 500 metres from Galle Road, where you can find the Weligama Bus Stop. You can reach this location from just about anywhere on the South Coast via bus. You can also hire tuk-tuks very quickly, and it's about LKR 300 to Matara, and about LKR 500 to Mirissa. There is also the Matara train station located about 3 kilometres away from the House. If coming from Colombo, get the highway bus to Matara as these buses regularly run all day, from 6:00 AM – 8:30 PM. There are three main places to get this bus from Pettah, Kaduwela, or Maharagama. The bus trip is approximately 2.5 hours. If coming from the airport, get the highway bus from there straight to Matara; however, there are only two buses daily, so you may prefer to get a taxi/tuk-tuk to Colombo and then to get the highway bus from there. Or if you are not in a rush and you want to see some sights along the way, then the train from Colombo to Matara is a good option. It is cheaper but takes longer.
