This palace served as the seat of residence for the Bavarian dukes, monarchs and electors till 1918 and ever since its inception the castle complex has expanded in opulence as well as size. The rooms and art collection span a period commencing from the Renaissance , with traces of early Baroque and Rococo, till Neoclassicism. Most of this regal structure was destroyed during the Second World War and was gradually reconstructed. Today, the Bavarian Palace Department museums, including the Residenz, the Treasury, and the Cuvillis Theatre, are some of the main striking features of the palace complex. The castle structure include ten courtyards which contribute to the mammoth size of the entire complex. The inner courtyards are used for open air concerts and festivals.
