Nakhchivan is the capital of Azerbaijan’s exclave Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (NAR). It ranks among the oldest cities in Transcaucasia, boasting a history spanning over 3000 years. Situated in the southwest of the country, bordering Turkey, Armenia, and Iran, Nakhchivan boasts a strategic location along ancient trade routes, contributing to its historical significance. But despite this, it remains relatively undiscovered by tourists due to its geographical isolation. However, the region offers a wealth of historical sites, natural wonders, and winter tourism opportunities for travelers.
Nakhchivan's attractions are a blend of historical and religious sites, with mausoleums being among the most prominent. The Tomb of the Prophet Noah, believed to be the final resting place of Noah himself, is a revered site for pilgrims and visitors. The Yusif ibn Kuseyir Mausoleum, noted for its distinctive octagonal shape and intricate stone carvings, offers insight into medieval Islamic architecture. Meanwhile, the Momine Khatun Mausoleum pays homage to an influential figure in Azerbaijan's history, known for her political wisdom and guidance.
The region's mineral waters and natural springs are also sought after for their reputed health benefits, particularly for respiratory ailments. Travel to Nakhchivan is mostly facilitated by its own airport, which serves domestic and international flights. Although it can also be accessed via road from Baku and other cities of Azerbaijan but this route is longer and often inaccessible due to the political conflicts in the region.
