It is also among the best connected of the 'Big Four of Isaan' - the other three being  Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen. Its connectivity to Bangkok and to Isan have made it a a great stopover to visit the number of other attractions around the city including Khao Yai national park, Phimai and Phanom Rung.

One the biggest provinces in Isan, it was built in the late seventeenth century by King Ayutthaya to protect the northeastern frontier from the Khmer attack. The highlight of the city itself is, however, the imposing statue of Thao Suranaree, a warrior woman, who led herself and her troops to a courageous and thumping victory from, the Laotian invaders. This sixth-largest city in Thailand is a heady mix of culture, history and modernity.
