A historic city along the River Tyne, Newcastle is a major city of North-Eastern England. Formerly known as Northumberland, it is an amazing city to experience traditional English culture, lined with historic sites around the city. It is also a hub for arts and sciences in the region, serving as a major educational centre. The massive Tyne Bridge is one of the city's most iconic landmarks, with the elegant Gateshead Millenium Bridge shadowing it across the Tyne river.
Built on the site of a former Roman settlement, Newcastle's history goes back centuries to early English settlements. The Hadrian Wall is probably the only remnant of this time, a great place to understand a little about ancient Roman culture. The Quayside district is the site of much of Old England, with the pretty riverfront backdrop amplifying the vibe of the area. For a more medieval feel, the Chares region by the Tyne Bridge holds all the well-preserved medieval architecture, giving you the feeling of travelling through a time machine back to Old England. More magnificent examples of English medieval architecture in Newcastle is the massive Newcastle Castle, one of the oldest structures in the city which gave the it its name. The St. Nicholas Cathedral of the city was built around the same time, making both these edifices the oldest and most popular attractions of this fascinating city. To add a flavour of intrigue to your trip, explore the underground Victoria tunnel, used to transport stone through wagons. Newcastle's museums are definitely worth a visit, especially the Discovery Museum, its inspiring collection documenting the evolution of science and technology through the ages. The archives of the prestigious British Film Institute are also stored here. The Great Northern Museum is a storehouse of the history of the land, right from the time of the Romans. You can also explore the nearby Jesmond Dene Park, one of the loveliest parks of England which adds the perfect splash of colour and scenic beauty to this historic city.
