Suwehan Beach is a secluded, untarnished beach in Nusa Penida which is yet to become too popular for throngs of tourists to crowd it. With white smooth sand dotted with jagged rock formations, clear blue waters in front, and forested limestone cliffs behind, Suwehan almost feels like a private beach. A pointy rock rising from the sea surface set against the blue horizon makes a great setting for excellent Instagram-worthy pictures.
Reaching Suwehan Beach is an adventure in itself. You will have to start from the top of a big cliff, where you will need to park your vehicle and climb down along a treacherous rocky trail. The path has now been shaped into steps by the local authorities and has a protective railing. The hike down the 342 steps takes about 20 minutes. Before heading down, you should stop at the Abangan Hills viewpoint to take a picture worth capturing.
Check with your accommodation or local guide about the tide timings for the day. The beach is not accessible during high tides as it gets submerged. If lucky, you can spot sea turtles, monitor lizards, and manta rays near the beach. The locals have built some treehouses where you can spend the night if you want to. It is not a luxury accommodation, but the indoors look cozier than the thatched hut-like outside appearance. The bathroom and shower are outside the treehouse. There is a small shack for ordering food. Do not expect any resort, restaurant, bar, or convenience store at the beach. There are shops at the parking lot where the downward trail starts.
