The Chilika Bird Festival is an annual celebration timed to coincide with the majestic congregation of 10 lakhs winged visitors representing 200 species at Mangalajodi during the winters in Odisha. This unique event allows participants to immerse themselves in the rich auditory tapestry created by the diverse voices of these avian guests.
Mangalajodi, hailed as the "Birds Paradise of Asia," is situated in the North Eastern part of Chilika, the largest brackish water lake in Asia. During winters, the sanctuary welcomes lakhs of winged guests from around the world. This region stands as a testament to successful conservation efforts, showcasing how preserving nature can generate livelihoods and combat poaching. With birds at eye level and close proximity, Mangalajodi is a haven for photographers.
On the 2nd day of the festival, a visit to Nalabana Bird Sanctuary, a beautiful island in the heart of Chilika, offers a chance to witness nesting colonies of colorful birds, including magnificent Greater Flamingos. This sanctuary, normally closed to the public, becomes accessible during the Chilika Bird Festival, providing a unique opportunity to appreciate the beauty of this avian haven.
