Dodabetta, literally translating to mean - Big Peak, is located approximately 10 km away from Ooty. It towers to a staggering height of 8650 feet or 2,623 meters above the sea level and is the highest peak in the Nilgiri Hills. A treat to the eyes, this picturesque land is indeed a great sightseeing place.

Dodabetta is one of the most preferred places to visit in Ooty and is also a popular trekking destination. The summit offers an astounding view of the nearby areas which are covered with dense forests and, on clear days, one can see as far as Mysore.

Dodabetta is strategically located between the Western and Eastern Ghats, thus it is an ideal vantage point for the entire Nilgiris. The peak, or the Dodabetta viewpoint, can be accessed via a vehicle as well as on foot, this feature makes it a perfect destination to visit whether you are seeking leisure or adventure.

Trek Routes

Doddabetta Peak is located exactly at the junction of the Western and Eastern Ghats. This junction is popularly known as the 4-Road intersection from where you can travel in four different directions. At the Doddabetta Road intersection, you can hire a private taxi until the summit which is located 3 kms away or you can choose to take up the challenge of trekking and enjoy the spectacular that the route has to offer.

How to reach Doddabetta Peak

Rail: The nearest railhead for Ooty is at Mettupalayam(approx 40 kms) from where it is connected by the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which is a toy train. This train was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is a recommended experience for all travellers.
Road: Dodabetta Peak is located at a distance of 8 kilometers from Ooty Bus Stand and can be accessed via bus as well as car.

Being the highest peak in the Ooty, this point is most attractive to the adventure lovers. Climbing it in the evening will be the best experience. Going by a car is also fine unless it gets struck in (Read More) the narrow steep roads. After you reach the point, there is a garden with variety of flowers. The best part of reaching the point is the telescope view. As the point is always crowded, it is usually hard to enjoy the telescope view for more than thirty seconds. It’s pleasant weather will be a respite during the summers.
