History of the Region

In August of 2014, Palghar was declared as the 36th district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Javhar, Vasai and Palghar constitute the Palghar district. Vasai had initially belonged to the Portuguese empire and later was ruled by the Marathas. Palghar town was regarded as a prominent point in the Chalejav Campaign of 1942. In August of 1942, Palghar there was a rebellion in Palghar. Several martyrs like Sukur Govind More, Kashinath Padghare, Ramachandra Mahadev Churi, Ramashankara Bhimashankara Tiwari and Govind Ganesh Thakur sacrificed their lives in this uprising. The central circle of the town has been named Paachbatti in the honour of these five renowned martyrs.
