Pandharpur is a pilgrimage centre situated on the banks of the Chandrabhaga river in Solapur district in Maharashtra. Known for its Shri Vitthal and Shrinati Rukmini Temples, attraction thousands of devotees every year, the place is popularly called as the Southern Kashi of India. Aashadhi and Kartiki Ekadashi are the most festive season that begins from September and lasts till the end of October.

The town of Pandharpur is considered to be the spiritual capital of Maharashtra and revered as the 'Supreme God of the Universe.' The square shaped vitthal temple is a five-story building with the idol of Lord shiva in the portico. The temple of Rukmini, the consort of Vitthala is just behind the main temple. Believed to be established in the 13th century, the temple chiefly celebrates Ashadha Ekadashi and Kartika Ekadeshi among other major festivities. Kaikadi Maharaj Math and Tanpure Maharaj Math are among the other main attractions in the town. The Chandrabhaga River, named after its crescent moon shape, enhances the beauty of the place.

Local Culture

Majority of the people in the town are Marathi speaking, the official language of the place. Other than that, Hindi is quite prevalent in the area. People here are quite friendly. However, as in all tourist destinations, tourists are charged an exorbitant prices which needs to be negotiated before you decide to accept any service. It is said that Saint Chityanya Mahaprabhu had 10 lives and meditated here for seven days straight. Pandharpur is also a well-known holy place for poet-saints of Maharashtrian Bhakri saints. Wednesdays are considered especially auspicious and remain largely crowded and busy.

Itinerary

If you reach Pandharpur in the morning, you can easily visit both Vithhala Temple and Rukmini temple in a day. The next day can be spent in making a round around the town to visit other deities, shopping and enjoying street food.

Pandharpur has an array of shops lined near its temples. Apart from the usual items of worship, the place is good to shop for traditional items such as bags, bangles, shoes etc. It is better to go to these shops in the street than visit any malls since one can bargain there. This also gives a glimpse of the local economy too.

Tips

If you visit during the peak season or any festivities, be ready to wait in the queue for hours. Book online tickets to save your time. Overcrowding also leads to losing your personnel items. So make sure you travel light and do not carry valuable items with you. Carry a water bottle and biscuits. Do not leave the hands of children. Carry as minimum cash as possible and avoid being allured into shops which may force you to buy certain things.
