Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, Georgetown Penang Overview

The Second Penang Bridge, also known as the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge, joins the mainland and the Penang Island from Seberang Perai all the way up till Gelugar. It stretches across an impressive length of 24 km making it the longest bridge in the Southeast Asian region.

The construction of this megastructure commenced in November 2008 and was finally completed in 2014 although the official plan was formulated in 2006. The wide ‘S’ curves featured by this magnificent bridge all along the route not only enhances it’s overall aesthetics, but also helps motorists to stay focused while driving for 20 minutes straight from either of its ends.

The Penang Bridge is named after Mr.Jambatan Sultan Abdul Halim Muzadam Shah, who is the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia.
It cost the Malaysian government about RM 4.5 billion to construct this megastructure.
Initially, this bridge was planned to have two massive viewing platforms on either sides along with a restaurant facing the calm sea. However, due to insufficient funds, these parts of the project had to be dropped off.
This 24 km long bridge has a number of curves along the route with the intention of preventing over-speeding and to avoid drowsiness amongst drivers.
Provided there is no traffic congestion, this bridge allows you to reach the other end in about 30 minutes if you drive within the speed range of 80 kmph!
This bridge is one of the rare bridges laminated with High Damping Natural Rubber Bearings (HRDRB) which is used to prevent any damage due to horizontal earthquake ground motions. The most impressive property of this bridge is that it can withstand earthquakes as strong as 7.5 on the Richter scale.
This bridge has already broken 15 Asian structural records and continues to be a constant source of pride to the country.

How to Reach Second Penang Bridge

Taking the Penang Ferry Service from the start of the bridge up till Georgetown is undoubtedly the best means to view the entire bridge and also, it’s very economic. One side of the trip is completely free of cost and the other side costs a minimal fee of RM 1.2 per person.

The trip takes about 25 to 30 minutes per side and provides an absolutely breathtaking view of this superstructure.
