Dating back to 1823, the Festival de las Máscaras de Hatillo marks the Feast of Holy Innocents, which falls on December 28th every year. On this day, according to the Bible, infant boys under the age of 3 were ordered to be killed by King Herod, who was looking for Baby Jesus.
The festival is marked by its extravagant costumes and masks worn by people across all age groups. The masked performers play the role of Herod’s soldiers looking to catch young children. The festival is known for showcasing local talent and cuisine to guests from all over, while giving them the perfect chance to socialize and enjoy their time here. The celebrations also commemorates the origins of the locals from the Canary Islands.
